IUD and positive pregnancy test

Dear Dr. Amy,

I have had an iud in for two yrs now and just recently i hve started with the pregancy feeling.
I took three home pregnancy tests. Two came back inconclusive and the other one said positive. If i am pregnant will the iud hurt this pregnancy?

Thank you,

Dear Lesley,

You need to talk this over with your doctor as soon as possible. A positive pregnancy test means that you are pregnant. Women who get pregnant with an IUD in place have an increased risk of an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy. This is a serious medical condition that needs to be treated. If you develop abdominal pain, you need to see a doctor right away, day or night.

In addition, the IUD could be harmful to a nomal pregnancy. In some cases, though, the IUD can be removed safely. Your doctor will probably order an ultrasound test to check on the status of the pregnancy.
