Is heavy menstrual bleeding a sign of pregnancy?

Dear Dr. Amy,

My husband and I have been trying for a few months now to have a baby. I have taken alot of pregancy tests, but they all come out negative. I have had some of the pregancy symptoms, like my breasts have been hurting alot and I have been eating alot but not getting full. My period was almost a month late. I was just wondering if bleeding heavily was part of the pregancy. It doesn't feel like a period, my cramps and mood swings are alot more intense than normal. I just don't want to get my hopes up. Can you tell me what it could be?

Thank You For Your Time,

Dear Chantel,

No, heavy bleeding is definitely not a sign of pregnancy. Most women do not have any bleeding during pregnancy. It can take many months to get pregnant; that is not a sign that anything is wrong. Check the article How long does it take to get pregnant? for more information.
