How does a bladder infection occur?

Hi Dr. Amy,

How does a women get a bladder infection? I am 8 months pregnant, have been fighting a yeast infection for the past couple of weeks, and now today I went to see my Dr. and she tested my urine and said I have a bladder infection now. How did I get it? My husband and I have not been having sex for awhile. Please give me some needed info.

Dear Stephanie,

The primary way a bladder infection occurs is that the bacteria that live on the outside of the genital area manage to make their way up the urethra (the tube that connects the bladder to the outside) into the bladder. Once there, they grow and cause an infection.

Pregnant women are more prone to bladder infections because they have altered immunity and because of the pressure of the uterus on the bladder an urethra. It is very important to treat bladder infections in pregnant women because they can cause premature labor.
