Do I need a blood pregnancy test?

Dear Dr. Amy,
My husband and I were not trying to concieve, although I think we may have.

I was on the pill all of September, on the 25 of Sept. was my last period. I missed a few pills in October and had unprotected sex about 5 times that month. I am now 3 weeks late and having a few symptoms, however, my doctor does not want to do a blood test yet, he wants to wait at least 2 more weeks, if not 4 to do the test.

Is this a bad idea? Should I go to an OB/GYN or keep going to my family practice physician. I really dont want to question his intelligence but he is just seeming like this is not a big deal at all. It would not be if all my home tests werent showing up negative and I wasn't 3 weeks late! What do you think?

By the way, your message board is the coolest thing ever and I would just like to thank you for providing that for all women out there.

Dear Kristin,

Thank you for you kind words!

You need to have a blood pregnancy test and there is really no reason to wait. I'm not sure why your doctor is hesitating. Tell him that you insist on the test. If he won't order the it, you'll have to go to another doctor.
