Cramping at 5 weeks

Hi, Dr. Amy!

I am around 5 1/2 weeks pregnant and am not scheduled to see my OBGYN until November 14th for my first exam. However, I have been experiencing abdominal cramping, its not severe, but it feels like menstrual cramps. Also, the past couple of days, I have had a light brown discharge late in the afternoons. Is this normal, or should I call my doctor and try to get an appointment earlier than the 14th.? I appreciate your advice very much.

Dear Hayley,

Although almost all miscarriages are accompanied by bleeding and cramping, that does not mean that anyone who has some bleeding or some cramping is destined to have a miscarriage. As long as neither the cramping or bleeding gets worse, everything is probably fine.

You can talk it over with your doctor. However, it is generally felt that there is no way to prevent a miscarriage, so there is not likely to be any treatment that you could get.
