Dear Dr. Amy,

I found out on Thursday that my fiance had cheated on me and caught an std. I went straight to the clinic on Friday morning and found I have chlamydia. The doc gave me doxycycline to clear it. Can drinking alcohol affect the effectivness of the tablets at clearing the infection?

I am also desperately worried that I may never be able to have kids now; have I found out in time? Does the infection stay in my system forever? Can I pass it on to a future boyfriend even after effective treatment? He was my only sexual partner ever I am devastaed and so scared, I appreciate any help you can offer. Thank you.

Dear Nic,

There is no way to know for sure, but it is likely that you have treated the infection before it caused serious damage to your fallopian tubes. Even if it did damage your tubes, you would still be able to have children through in vitro fertilization.

The antibiotics should cure the chlamydia infection. It will be gone from your body and you would not be able to pass it on to anyone else.

Many doctors recommend avoiding alcohol while on doxycycline.
