Umbilical cord cyst

I had an ultrasound done at 19 weeks and received a call from the doctor's office a couple of days later saying not to worry, but that I need to see a specialist about a cyst on the umbilical cord. Even though they said not to worry they offered no explanation of what this really means. I am concerned as to what this could mean for my baby boy! I am 30 years old and this is my first pregnancy.

Very concerned,
Carrie

Dear Carrie,

Most umbilical cysts do not indicate a problem. However, about 20% of the time umbilical cysts are associated with birth defects or chromosome problems. If the ultrasound shows no problems besides the cyst, it is likely everything is fine. However, if there are any questions about other structures, the doctor may recommend amniocentesis to check the baby's chromosomes.

Sincerely,
Amy
