Rash during pregnancy

Dear Dr. Amy

I am 30 weeks pregnant and haven't had many problems, but I noticed today that I have a unusual rash across my stomach. Do I need to worry or is this common?

Thank you,

Dear Becky,

Only someone who examines you can tell you what the rash is, but some pregnant women develop a rash called PUPPP. This stands for pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy. This rash is most common in women expecting their first baby and usually occurs in the third trimester. PUPPP is not harmful, but it can be very itchy. Talk to your doctor about it at your next visit, or sooner if it bothers you.
