Quitting smoking while pregnant

I have been a pack a day smoker for the past two years and was a light smoker for a few years before I stated smoking more. I recently found out I was pregnant. I am 18 years old and about 5 weeks along. Some people have told me to quit cold turkey so my baby will be healthy and I not have a miscarriage, while others say if I quit cold turkey my body and my baby will go into shock and I will have a miscarriage. What is the best option? I m so scared of having a miscarriage, and I want to do the best thing for my baby.

Dear S,

Quitting smoking cold turkey will not cause a miscarriage. In fact, quitting smoking will reduce your risk of miscarriage. Keep in mind, though, that the risk of miscarriage in any pregnancy is 20%, so quitting does not guarantee that you couldn't have a miscarriage.
