Positive pregnancy test after miscarriage

Hi Dr. Amy,

I had a miscarriage after being five weeks pregnant. Thirty two days have now gone by since the first date of the miscarriage. I have this morning done a pregnancy test and it is positive. Is this okay? Am I supposed to have a proper period between? Silly question but you read all sorts of things!!

Thanks,
LF

Dear LF,

You don't need to have a period before getting pregnant again. However, it is possible that you had a positive pregnancy test because you still have pregnancy hormone left over from the previous pregnancy. This can be sorted out by measuring your blood levels of HCG to see if they are rising (new pregnancy) or falling (miscarriage).

Sincerely,
Amy
