Metronidazole (Flagyl) in early pregnancy

I was taking Metronidazole at a dose of 400mg tid and later found out that I was pregnant. I am 6+ weeks now and have calculated that I would have been around 2 and a half weeks pregnant at the time I was taking the Metranidazole. Can you tell me if this was a high dose of Metranidazole and also if it may have any negative effects on my unborn baby?

Dear Jen,

You were taking the standard dose of metronidazole. Metronidazole is considered safe for use in pregnancy if medically necessary, although it is usually avoided in pregnant women because it has not been well studied. The risks in your case are theoretical because you were taking it in the very earliest stage of pregnancy, perhaps before the embryo implanted. Be sure to talk over your concerns with your doctor. He or she should be able to reassure you.
