Getting insurance for prenatal care

Dear Dr. Amy,

I am 21 years old and 8 months pregnant. My fiance and I have tried everything to get insurance, but we haven't been able to get it. No doctor will see us without it. Will I be able to tell if there is something wrong with my baby before it is born? Thank you.

Dear Alora,

Many states have special programs for pregnant women who don't have insurance. The state provides insurance until the baby is born, and then the state provides insurance for the baby. You should check with your state government to see what is offered. There are also free clinics and hospital based clinics that provide medical care for uninsured women who are pregnant. You should make every effort to get some prenatal care, both for your sake and that of the baby.

There is no reason to think that there is anything wrong with your baby, but there is no way to know for sure until the baby is born.
