Daughter's periods have stopped

Dear Dr. Amy

My daughter has not have her period this year. First she was having irregular periods and now it just stopped. I have an appointment to see an obgyn next week but I am very worried and concerned because she is just fourteen and as a mother who had never experience this before I am very scared. I hope it is nothing serious.

A worried mother

Dear Worried Mother,

Many young teenage girls are very irregular, but it makes sense to get this checked out. It is possible that she has polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormone problem that can cause irregular periods. If that's the case, the doctor will most likely prescribe birth control pills to regulate her period, even if she doesn't need protection from pregnancy. That's because going months at a time without a period puts her at risk for developing abnormal cells in the uterus many years in the future.

The doctor may also order a pregnancy test, since that is always a possibility. It may not really be a possibility in this case, but the doctor doesn't know that, and young girls often lie to the doctor about sexual activity.
