Cyst in pregnancy

Hi,

What are the risks of having a cyst when you are pregnant. Can it harm the baby?

Thank you,
Lori

Dear Lori,

It depends on the type of cyst. The most common ovarian cyst in early pregnancy is a corpus luteum cyst. This cyst forms on the ovary at the site where the egg was released. The majority of corpus luteum cysts will go away by themselves. Occasionally a cyst will cause pain. Rarely a cyst will rupture and cause bleeding and severe pain. The cyst itself cannot harm the baby.

Sincerely,
Amy
