Coffee in pregnancy

Dear Dr Amy,

Can drinking coffee during pregnancy cause any problems? My sister is concerned she may be drinking too much. She is currently 30 weeks and has an 11th month old baby. She saw her gynacologist this week and was told that the heart beat is very fast is now worried that it is due to her coffee drinking. Would appreciate any advice.

Many thanks,
Sandra

Dear Sandra,

It all depends on what the heartrate is and whether there is any abnormal heart rhythm. Coffee usually does not cause any problems, but if there is an abnormal heart rhythm, this should be investigated with an ultrasound and, if there is any sign of a problem, she may need to eliminate caffeine from her diet. She should talk it over with her doctor to get her doctor's recommendation.

Sincerely,
Amy
