Blood work

My doctor recently sent me for blood work after my annual exam. I am unsure of the reasoning for this blood work and am trying to decipher the things he is having checked. Some of the things he is testing for is progesterone, CBC with Diff, TSH, Prolactin, Free and total testosterone, DHEAS, LH, FSH among others. I am just wondering, could he suspect I am pregnant, thus the blood test? Overall though, I was wondering what the hormones are associated with pregnancy.

Thanks for your help!

Dear A,

None of these hormone tests are for pregnancy. Only a measurement of HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) will tell you if you are pregnant.

The CBC is just a blood count that is often done routine to be sure that you are not anemic. The other tests are hormones that are associated with menstrual problems and fertility problems. If you complained about irregular periods or difficulty getting pregnant, these tests are a first step in evaluating the problem.
