Angleman Syndrome

My fiance has a daughter from his previous relationship. She has angelman syndrome. What are the chances of the happening to us when we decide to have a baby? Should we do testing before hand? Thank you.

Dear Amy,

Angleman Sydrome is caused by a genetic problem that is inherited from a parent, often the father. Therefore, it could happen when you decide to have a baby together. You should see a genetic counselor, and your fiance should have genetic testing. That way you will know if he carries the defect and what the chances are of passing it on again.
